STRANGER ON THE SHORE is Book 4 in Marilyn Brant’s Mirabelle Harbor series, but this story and all of the contemporary romances in this series can be enjoyed as stand-alone novels.
On the verge of turning forty and having just lost her job, Marianna Gregory flees Mirabelle Harbor for the summer with little more than a suitcase, her beat-up car, and the blessings of her good friend Olivia Michaelsen. Her ex-husband is living a new life in California. Her college-aged daughter is spending her vacation with her boyfriend in Michigan. And the house Marianna once called her own finally sold, so she has nowhere to live in Illinois now anyway.
However, her wealthy sister Ellen owns an empty bungalow on the beach in Sarasota, Florida, so Marianna turns to the sea for a chance to go shelling, regroup, and figure out what to do with this new chapter in her life. She doesn’t bargain on having to face down several family crises while she’s away, nor does she count on meeting a handsome beachcomber who bears a striking resemblance to Elvis. Just as surprising is the craft project she gets roped into volunteering for and the new group of friends who might just change the way she views the world and her future.
The most unexpected gifts can be found where the land meets the sea. STRANGER ON THE SHORE, a Mirabelle Harbor story.

Story Excerpt
“So—” Gil began. Then stopped. “As we were watching the movie, it occurred to me that you might not have seen much of the Siesta Key nightlife, being so new to the area and all. Have you heard of the Sunday night drumming at the beach?”
“No.”
He explained something about how a bunch of local folks got together and beat on their drums to an extemporaneous rhythm of their own making, while people of all ages danced on the sand. “It’s fun,” he assured me.
“Sounds like it,” I said, though, to be honest, I was having a hard time imagining myself at an event like that. Seemed a little hippyish.
“So, after the Craft Festival is over tomorrow, would you like to go with me? Usually starts around six o’clock.”
“Sure. Are Joy, Abby, or Lorelei planning to come, too?”
He shook his head and, just to torment me, licked both his top and bottom lips. “I don’t, um, generally bring my sister on my dates…and definitely not her coworker or her married friend.” He grinned, but there was an endearing look of nervous self consciousness that he seemed unable to hide. “Still want to go, Marianna?”
Then his words sank in. “On a date? With you?” I had to ask, just to make sure I wasn’t misinterpreting his question.
“Yeah.”
“Well, yes, Gil—of course.” And I nodded for emphasis. Then, in a rare bolt of audacity, I even added, “What took you so long to ask?”
He laughed loudly, the tension in the space between us dissolving. “That’s what I was hoping you’d say.” And then, ever so tenderly, he brought those wet, luscious lips of his down toward my face and brushed my mouth with a light kiss.
A kiss that, after just a few seconds of our lips touching, turned deeper, harder, wilder.
A passionate kiss that promised so much more…
My breath caught at the surprising intensity of it, and the tension between us returned with a heat that spiked like a fever.
Now I was the one trying to mask my own nervous self consciousness. “Um.”
“Goodnight, Marianna,” Gil said, taking a deliberate step back from me and toward his own car. “Until tomorrow.”

4.5 starsThis book began slowly for me. Think of it as stage setting and introducing a number of characters, their backgrounds and their present day relationships. And, Boy! Do they bring a lot of baggage with them. We have more than one parent-child conflict in the personal histories. There is a bitter divorce for one with a manipulative ex-husband who can’t stay out of the picture and even attempts to use their child to gain what he wants. Then there are the sibling relationships: one in which the parents have played the “good child/bad child” card to push buttons and taint how the sisters view each other. The other set of siblings has formed a close and supportive relationship as they see a father using his riches to get his way, even if it is done secretly.
One lady in the circle has in her past a man, Chandler Michaelsen, who was referenced in previous books and who has severe commitment issues in his professional and personal life. Abby committed 5 years to following him around the country until she realized he was not going to change.
The story begins with our primary lady, Marianna, aged ~40, packing up in Mirabelle Harbor and going off to vacation in her sister’s bungalow in Sarasota for a few weeks before returning to Michigan to look for a new job and a new residence. Soon she meets Vivian and Gil on the beach and then Joy, Abby and Lorelei while “window shopping” as she goes to town to buy beach shoes. It was interesting to read as she is recruited to help out on a project to help support protecting endangered animals. As she forms new and supportive relationships and the circle expands, she is jolted back to the realities in her biological family as first her sister and then other family members show up unexpectedly at the bungalow. Each brings not only their presence but significant happenings in their lives to take attention from Marianna’s new circle, even her new male interest.
We meet Marianna’s older-by-five-years sister, Ellen, a Type A personality who has the “perfect life” but suddenly finds her body sending her a message which she can’t seem to figure out. She and her husband, Jared, think time away will solve the problem. So she’s also off for a vacation.
Gil, an artist, is described as looking like Elvis. (I had a problem wrapping my head around that image for some reason.) He is the confirmed bachelor in the group. His sister, Joy, “suffers” from a condition she calls synethesia and describes it as her senses being jumbled; she sees people in colors or fruits or auras. They grew up in Texas but left there to put down roots in Florida.
As some feelings are explored and shared and explained I found myself much more drawn in and having moments when my senses led to teary eyes for me.
While this is a stand-alone book, I must note that the couples in this series don’t seem to have any wedding plans and I can’t help but wonder where Marilyn is going with this. Are there weddings in a future book? I guess I just have to stay tuned to find out.

REVIEW
The Mirabelle Harbor Book Series has been a delight for the reading pallet as Marilyn Brant has released each of her continuing stories about the families and interesting characters that have grown-up and live in and around Mirabelle Harbor. With each addition to the series, we have come to know the characters a little more, laughing at their foibles and commiserating with them over their sorrows and mistakes of life.
I first read little hints, snippets and short chapters and tantalizers about this book last year in a group where she was sharing her ideas about Stranger on the Shore. I loved where the story was going then, so was excited to finally have the completed release ARC copy to finally read the whole story.
Unlike the other Mirabelle Harbor stories, this story takes place on the coast and glorious beaches of Florida instead of the Midwest. This time instead of young love finding its way, it is a story of healing and of love coming softly to a woman in her forties who finds herself homeless, childless, and divorced. It wound its way through the hilarity of a gaggle of mismatched women who bonded together through a common love of crafting for a local beach shop, to care for each other and lift each other up through their trials and sorrows. They did this all while having fun and bonding as only women can, along the way.
Love crept softly through the crevices of this story and amongst this gaggle of women as it slowly melted the hard place that had formed in Marianna’s heart. When her elder sister shows up with Marianna’s daughter, it all goes to hell in a handbasket. For it turns out that the healing needs to go deeper than just the loss of a marriage, but also needs to find peace between sisters. In doing so, Marianna finally finds herself free to love again.
The summer on the beach and the stranger on the shore is more than a shallow summer read. Though light with characters who keep you in stitches, as only Marilyn knows how to write about, each one adds her piece of blessing to the recipe for a wonderful story with a magical ending. There is no disappointment in this book that is perfect to carry to the beach (or wherever your vacation takes you) this summer.
I give this book a great FOUR ½ STAR review for Marilyn’s wonderful storytelling and for the shear entertainment, also for the tenderness she wove into the novel to give it depth and meaning. I loved this read!!!
This one just makes me crave the beach. Marilyn Brant is a great writer and I really felt the disconnect of Marianna as she tries to start over in mid-life. Another great one, I look forward to the next!
Loved the characters and how they overcome their issues. At first I wasn't sure I liked the idea of moving the location to Florida but it worked very well and looks like it should lead nicely to what looks to be the next book. I love Marilyn Brant's writing--can't wait for the next book in each series, but always sad when a series ends.
Sincere and emotionally charged. This wonderful story had me in its grip and transported me to the delightful Sarasota. I really loved the community feel of Sarasota. I enjoyed the very delightful 'family' Joy, Lorelei, Abbey, Gil and Vivian.
A very personal account as Marianna had to deal with some tough issues. Gil was a lovely gentle soul and just the right remedy.
The descriptiveness throughout the novel was mesmerizing and brilliant.
As a lover of food and its emotional quality I always enjoy the way food is incorporated into Marilyn's stories. Everything is much more warm and satisfying. It all sounds so heavenly.
Marilyn is a wonderful story teller and I always look forward to her new releases. I highly recommend this book.
