The very first page of the Prologue grabbed me in such a way, that I could barely lay down the book to eat or sleep. There was enormous suspense in flying the SAC B-52 bombers, loaded with hydrogen bombs, with the question always hanging in the air, "Is this the time when we drop IT; and, if so, will we ever get back safely?" And, then, beginning with Chapter One, the son of the SAC pilot has finished medical school and launches a career as an emergency room physician. No one can imagine the drama and the stress of the life-and-death decisions that an ER doc makes--no one, that is, except someone who has "been there, done that." Amidst the sometimes overwhelming demands in ER, the young doctor recalls the two words that echo in his head over and over again: "Stay focused."

The writer repeatedly points out glaring deficiencies and inefficiencies in the American sickness care system: inadequate and insufficient primary care providers, early intervention, and patient education. And then there's the corporate control of the system, which often provides very expensive technology, but only if there a good return on the investment. And, to provide much delightful interest, there's the interplay of romance reflected in the relationships between nurse and doctor.

This is a must-read.

Full Moon Saturday Night John Ellis 9781478718956 Books Reviews

Wow... a book based on true experiences, written by the physician that was actually there! The story of how two people met and fell in love is so sweet in such a demanding environment of emergency medicine coupled with the challenges of intrigue from unlawful life situations all around them. I couldn't put the book down! It is a must read!
This book is action packed and fast paced. It is a very realistic and beleivable story and would make a great movie. I would recommend it to anybody looking for an exciting book.
It held my interest throughout. I related to many of the descriptions of medical conditions and the emergency room. Good review of the hospital environment for me.
Colonel Ellis gives you a panoramic view of what it is like in an emergency room as the gory details of trauma treatment unfolds. You become a part of the struggles a young doctor faces as he enters the real world of practicing medicine. Well written, keeps your interest, timely especially with the great changes coming in health care next year. The opening description of a B-52 pilots experience during the cold war makes all of us appreciate the sacrifices made to keep this nation free. I give Full moon Saturday night a strong five (5). B. G. Jackson, Colonel, USAF, Retired
Really a saga about Ronny, the new doctor and his journey. I was intrigued with the stories about his patients juxtaposed with the day to day details of his growing relationship with an ER Nurse, married to the new creepiest character I've run across! A nice mix between fact and fiction.
I’m a mystery buff who also likes medical thrillers. When I learned about Full Moon Saturday Night from a friend, I purchased it immediately and was not disappointed. My friend told me not to get sidetracked by a prologue that didn’t seem pertinent to a medical mystery, so I was able to simply enjoy it for the compelling story within a story that it turned out to be. And once I got into the actual mystery, I ended up reading it in one sitting. I was so drawn to the finely-drawn characters that I simply had to find out what happened. The story is well-paced with a steady build-up of tension to the final reckoning. The focus is on people and moral dilemmas, not excessive gore. I also enjoyed the way the author wove in rich details about the challenges of healthcare delivery in rural American.
John Ellis gets it. He writes from the perspective of one who knows the mystery, symbolism and intrigue of a southern Saturday night. Throw in a full moon and it seems to kindle fires within many which stifles their timid reserve and motivates their actions toward those that are reckless and unrestrained. Some of these who are so moved ruin their lives, lose their lives, lose their health, lose their families. We read about such so wrapped into a dramatic and dynamic plot that the reader's thoughts and emotions are held hostage until it can be completely read. The intrigue is there and the mystery and excitement is there but there is important unique social commentary from the perspective and dynamic of the physician, and more especially the ER physician, that needs to be known by all of us. It is a particular timely moment for this book to be published and make its appearance as the health care issue in our society is being hotly debated and social justice relating to the same is being discussed. Ellis doesn't preach but makes us aware of the issues. I heartily recommend this book. It is acutely entertaining and socially stimulating.
