I have to say I didn't expect to like this book after reading that Rachel was taller, older, more mature and more sexually experienced than Matthew. I've gotten used to Harlequin books having a certain formula and this one didn't adhere to that, but I'm actually happy that it didn't.

Okay, so Matthew gets drunk at a party and Rachel has to change him out of his wet clothes. In his inebriated state, he tries to undress and seduce Rachel and unbeknownst to them, someone takes pictures of them in various states of undress. Pictures are then sent to each of them as blackmail attempts and each one thinks that the other one is behind the blackmail. In an effort to thwart the media fallout should the blackmailer make good on his claims, they come up with a plan to say that they are an engaged couple and are therefore forced into each others lives.

This is the first (and so far only) book I've read by Susan Napier and I found her writing to be entertaining, steamy, and enjoyable. I did have some issues with the plot, especially Michael's reasons for never having had sex and the way it was revealed, all seemed a little too forced and contrived for me.

However, both characters were believable and likable, and both had really heartbreaking things happen in there backgrounds. I couldn't help but love Rachel for her strength and the love she had for her family. So many of these Harlequin heroines are weak and weepy and put up with whatever the hero dishes out to her. Kudos to Ms Napier to have a heroine who has backbone and a brain.

Also, loved the ending. Too cute.

I so look forward to reading more of Ms Napier's work after having read this one.

A solid 3 1/2 stars. Because of the issues I had I couldn't give it more but I still liked it and enjoyed her writing style.

The Mistress Deception Presents Susan Napier 9780263819809 Books Reviews

A great story! Meet Matt - he's successful, intelligent, sexy and as mad as hell with Rachel whom he believes is blackmailing him...only she thinks that he is threatening her! Compromising photos get them both excited and it takes the two of them to solve the mystery! Matt is a complex, loveable character and Rachel is intelligent, independent and savvy. They make a great pair!
I found it hard to believe that this guy was a virgin. Wouldn't the other women that he dated have wondered about that. The whole contrived bondage pics were rather juvenile. Heck he came across as a spoiled, bully. Then the fact that they both just all of a sudden completely trust one another like that. Especially after all the things he spouted off to her at that party. I think he needed to grow up and FAST!!! Didn't really care for either of the characters! No real depth or anthing, couldn't connect.
Talk about steam...this book is filled with it. This is definitely recommended if you enjoy passionate, sexy, fast paced romances. The chemistry between the characters make the book sizzle. Matthew and Rachel (the main characters) are really different...they're not what you expect! Unfortunately, mention cannot be made here of what the suspense is, or it'll spoil the story! Any Susan Napier fans will definitely want this book, and so will people who love steam!
Compromising photographs, partly enhanced, are sent to Rachel Blair and Matthew Riordan for reasons unknown. Rachel has also been the focus of annoying incidents, but can't imagine who is behind them. Matt decides to defuse the scandal potential by announcing his engagement to Rachel.
Not up to Napier's usual high standards. The premise has potential, but the application was weak. Usually I am engrossed from the first paragraph, but this time I found my attention wandering. If this is the first time you have read a Susan Napier, don't pick this book.
