This was a real slog to get through, mainly because of the enormous number of unhappy people who can't seem to overcome events of the past and get on with their lives and subsequently make life miserable for everyone else around them. The present tense story is set in an old English manor house, inherited by two sisters. Both are haunted by the childhood disappearance of their bully of a cousin - the younger because she was too young to remember all the details (and wants to), and the older because of her role in the disappearance. The other part of the story follows their great grandmother and her time spent homesteading on a ranch in the Oklahoma Territory. Some form of resolution occurs at the end, but it seems like too little too late to make me feel good about the book. I only finished it to see if something good could come of all the pain.

I guess there really is a ripple effect that can cascade over generations based on a spur of the moment choices. We, as the reader, get to see the big picture that helps to illuminate the root of the problems that the various characters have to muddle through in confusion. How do we ever make it through unscathed ourselves?
We've seen this story before - someone dies, an elderly aunt, a grandmother, or a distant relation - and while claiming their inheritance, or settling the estate, a surviving relative explores the past and strives to solve a family mystery. So the story is familiar, but the author, Katherine Webb, puts an interesting twist on it. The book is told in two time periods, the present, in which Erica and her sister Beth deal with their grandmother's house and legacy and try to sort out the deep unhappiness they've seen in their grandmother's and great grandmother Caroline's lives, and the past, in which we see Caroline's life when she was a very young woman. Adding a twist to the present is the relatively recent past, in which Erica and Beth's cousin Henry disappeared when he was eleven years old.

The solution to the mystery took me by surprise. That's probably the main reason I liked this book so well. I totally did not anticipate the ending. Add to that the fact that the book is well written, the characters are well developed, and the past is insightfully described. I highly recommend THE LEGACY and look forward to reading more from Katherine Webb in the future. The Legacy A Novel
This has to be one of my favorite novels. I love the way the great grandmother's life was full of loneliness, disappointment that you felt sorry for her,but then she did the unthinkable to a trusted friend and never looked back and continued to live a lie that she created. Her great grand children, upon inheriting her mansion begin to unravel her secrets that tie into their own memories of their childhood in the very house they had spent summers with their grandmother. Their childhood friend was never welcome to visit them. The girls had to slip off to the camp for their play dates. The reason for this hatred for the "Travelers Camp" is a mystery until the end. It was a can't put it down book for me.
The book is an enjoyable read, but the last chapter was so confusing to me that I never did figure out who these new characters were or what relationship they were supposed to have had with the earlier family in the story. The epilogue tied a few ends up and was helpful in closure of the story, but it seemed like an after thought to keep the readers from losing their collective minds. When reading with a one cannot go back into earlier chapters to find clues to what may have been missed, so I will never know who the people in the last chapter were and it bothers me. I would try another book by this author.
I loved this book, I wasn't confused at all by the alternating stories of 1900's Oklahoma and modern day England. I was a bit confused on how everything would tie together. I did find Caroline a bit helpless and I was angry at her for her later actions. I loved the portrayal of Dinny and his family, modern day gypsies. I thought the relationship between Erica, Beth and her son Eddie were believable. My only disappointment is that, read on a kindle, I thought I still had 20% of the book to read, but it was actually a preview of another book. I wasn't ready for the story to end. And although the epilogue tied up some loose ends about Caroline and Meredith, I wanted things to be more resolved in the modern era part of the story. I guess a good book should leave you wishing for more. Can't wait to read more by this author.
This book left me cold. The reviews made it sound like the type of book I would like, but I found that not to be so. The characters, especially the two sisters, were whiny and annoying. Erica "Beth you have to talk about it. You have to tell me." Beth "I can't Erica, no, I can't." This is paraphrased, of course, but it was said numerous times. The hero, Dinny, was one dimensional, almost cardboard. And the "secret" was just about unbelieveable. I have another book by this author, I hope it is better. It definitely can't be worse.
I found this book unbelievably boring, serves me right not to read a sample first! It appeared in recommended section after I read "The butterfly garden". Imagine how dissapointed I was! The description I read seemed intriguing - I like long lost family secrets detective flicks but this... Only Caroline's chapters seemed more or less interesting it would be a better book if it was just about her and her life adjusting in the prairie, but probably author didn't have enough material for that and threw a couple of plain cardboard characters and a stupid 'twist'. For me this book is like a chewing gum you've been chewing for a good long while, it long lost it taste but for some reason you keep chewing it encouraged by short flavor flashes.
