Sparks Sparks Saga Book 1 eBook RS McCoy

Sparks is an impressive first work from a new writer. The story revolves around a boy, Lark, who agrees to leave his poor family in order to provide medicine for his dying mother. He is transported to Mynixi, a school for children such as he who have a "spark" or a special ability. Lark's special ability is to read the minds of others, but his ability is untrained - and at times its funny the issues he has because of this special ability. Lark must pass 10 rounds of various training in order to graduate, but his mentor, Avis, is bent initially on pushing him out of the program. Along the way, Lark develops deep friendships, finds love and battles political intrigue, all while growing his spark. The story is creative as well as complex. It's a grand tale of adventure - one that you'll have a hard time putting down.

Sparks Sparks Saga Book 1 eBook RS McCoy Reviews

3.5 stars this book was pretty incredible, and I was pleasantly surprised at the story it told. Lark, the main character, lives in a poor village. He hunts to bring home food to his sick mother and starving father. Nearly everyone in the village has the same illness, as no one can afford the expensive medicine. Soon after, Lark learns that his father has sold him in order to get money to help their mother. In a strong scene, Lark doesn't hold any resentment towards his father for this- but he can't help feeling guilty that he WANTS to escape the village; he feels guilty that all his motivation for leaving is not merely to save his mother's life. We see early on that Lark has the ability to read people's thoughts- except for another girl from the village who also leaves with him, as she has nowhere else to go.

The traveller reveals that he is gathering students who have the 'Spark' or certain abilities. He himself has a Spark, and that is the ability to find these sorts of people. The students are taken to a school, where they are trained. The author does a good job here of world-building. All the tasks they have to complete are detailed, and you can clearly picture Lark's day to day life. In a surprising move, the book spans months to years; time moves fairly quickly across pages. Mixed in with Lark learning how to use his abilities, is the shady headmistress and headmaster, both of whom want to use Lark for their own nefarious purposes. It would have gotten 4 stars but there were a couple aspects I found confusing towards the end. It could also use a bit more editing (no spelling errors, but some sentences didn't make sense with the word used). Also at one instance, the author writes that Lark completes his 14th summer, even though several chapters previous, he had already turned 16.
As a fellow author, I find that the world building, character development, and pacing tend to make or break a book for me. As such, I focus my reviews in these areas. With that said, here are my opinions on Sparks

World Building

McCoy very carefully builds up the world for his story – one community at a time. She spends just enough time within the settings to bring them to life and help create a mental map of how the world is laid out. The little foreshadowing that stands out I think is because it’s for places we haven’t been yet, but which will become important as the series unfolds. She is very careful to include little details that many would consider insignificant, details that really help to bring to life the tundra, forests, mountains, and seas of the world without taking them completely into the unknown.
The political world is not as well defined, though after reading the series, I can see the foundations that are being laid out in this installment. It is going to be interesting to see how those develop and become more influential.

Character Development

From early childhood into mid-to-late adolescence, we get to experience life along side the main characters. This creates an opportunity to build up the characters from absolutely nothing into people who can (and will) carry the story easily on their shoulders. McCoy does not stint when she unearths a new layer of the personalities for the characters – granted the most focus is on the main characters, but the secondary cast also gets attention as well. This makes for a beautifully woven tapestry that the characters move across throughout the story as it unfolds.

Pacing

As with the other areas I look at, the pacing felt like it was spot on – nothing felt like it lagged, nor did anything feel like it was rushed. The places that had a naturally slower pace were eased into, just as the scenes that needed to feel a bit more hectic were built up properly.
