Book Review- Rain by Amanda Sun

Katie decided to stay in Japan with her aunt. She has yet to talk to Tomo. He hasn’t answered her calls or texts. When he sees her at the festival, he is surprised. Katie is not sure where she fits in anymore since he is there with another girl and she hasn’t heard from him. She leaves to find her friends while Tomo chases after her. They reunite to watch the fireworks but are surprised when ink rains from the sky.
Tomo is Kami and his control on his powers is not the best. He is fighting his ink from taking him over. Katie is trying to help him gain control but also learn to live in Japan and sustain the relationship she has with him.
When the ink tries to take control over Tomo, Katie turns to Jun to get information about the Kami. She knows he likes her but her heart belongs to Tomo and she will help him no matter what, even seeking information from his rival.
Tomo fears what his powers will force him to do and he tries to push Katie away to keep her safe but she refuses to go. She is determined to see this through. The ink is getting stronger and Katie is afraid she thinks she knows why. She questions whether Tomo is evil or not. She also wonders if she makes things worse for him.
When Tomo starts losing control Katie and Jun rush to help him. As they face each other shocking revelations come to light. An ageless battle between good and evil continues. Katie fights to stop the battle and keep Tomo’s ink at bay.
This is the second book in the Paper Gods series. The story takes up where the first book, Ink, left off. Katie has decided to stay in Japan and she is determined to embrace the Japanese culture and people. The author really includes a lot of cultural instances where Katie was out of her depth. She had awesome friends that maneuvered her around them.
In this storyline the author also throws in some confusion for Katie. The characters in the first book that she and Tomo fought against become allies. Katie wasn’t sure who she could trust to help Tomo. In the end she is surprised who really turns on her.
The story continues in the next book, Storm. This is an intriguing series unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I like the characters and the plot. I give this book a 4 out of 5.

Rain The Paper Gods Amanda Sun Books Reviews

My daughter loves the series and will enjoy this book.
I felt like I was reading a manga with less pictures that's where your imagination comes in
Wonderful. Second book in the paper gods series and it is just as amazing as the first. I fell in love with the characters all over again and was crying, laughing and screaming right along with them. Once again I found myself unable to put it down.
I kinda wish the books had been in a bag or something bc it was several things shipped together and afew corners got bent but overall imhappy-- i love the series😍
A great second book to Ink.
I'm really loving this series. This is book 2 in the Paper Gods Trilogy and I liked it more than book 1. The main focus of the book is Tomo dealing with being a Kami and trying to keep it under control and Katie trying to be there for him and help him. Of course, other stuff does happen but you just have to read it. One of the reasons I loved this book is because there were more intimate moments between Tomo and Katie. AND I LOVED IT!

"He looked like a prince; he looked like a demon. The glow and shadow flickered like candlelight, and I wasn't sure which he belonged to. But I knew I wanted him to belong to me."

Such a great love story mixed in with all the drawings, kami, and chaos. I would recommend this book for anyone who likes a totally unique paranormal romance. It's really great!
Review

The first book in this series wasn’t really as excellent or satisfactory as I was hoping and I expected quite a lot due to me really enjoying Japanese themed books and wanting something exceptional to come with that setting which has a million possibilities that haven’t yet been delved into.

My main con was simple – nothing really happened till the end, where the story picked up pace all of a sudden and there was action and revelations galore. It was basically Katie running between talking to Jun to talking to Tomo and then some bits with the annoying pest Shiori and then some with her friends and repeat. The story kept going in circles and there was no substantial progress. It wasn’t entirely tedious to follow, however, because there doesn’t always have to be a lot of action, sometimes the complicated relationships compensate for the lack of development. Still, the backstory and mythology that this story has set up is fascinating and intriguing and I would have loved to see it explored to the degree it deserves. Despite this, as soon as the ending was near, I have to admit that it got quite action-packed and I was on the edge of my seat. The revelations were with cool twists, which predict promising developments for the last book (hopefully). Overall, I really really loved the tone and place this book ended with.

Another aspect I didn’t like shouldn’t be a surprise anymore
Why was there a need for a love triangle? Ok, I have to admit that till about 75% of the book I was fine with that, it wasn’t that bothersome, but then suddenly Katie let’s something happen that upped the triangle to the level of “aggravating.” In a way it can also be called a two-way triangle, because there was also Shiori, who wasn’t entirely happy (which is an understatement) with Tomo and Katie and acted jealous, crazy and put her nose where it didn’t belong.

Despite my whining, I actually really enjoyed the book, even though, there were a multitude of aspects I wasn’t entirely fond of. The intensity and the-expect-the-unexpected atmosphere regarding the ink was exciting and you never knew when it would manifest and cause trouble again or what it all meant anyway, was it a blessing to be tamed or a curse. The mythology aspect was very well done.

The background of everything Japanese was again top notch, bits and pieces of this different society didn’t over flood the plot, it was subtle and explained in detail only the parts that were necessary for character development or plot. School life was portrayed realistically as well, for example, the fact that Katie was urged to study kanji more diligently or face expulsion and an international school. And the fact that she actually did work hard to be better.

Characters

Katie was confused and just running around without any results in this, which was a pity because I did like her in this book since she didn’t run away from issues and was actively trying to solve them or at least gather information. Her too close involvement with Jun did get on my nerves in the end, but the initial reasoning for the contact was logical and fine.

The boys I liked Tomo, I really did, and I somewhat liked Jun till one point, then I didn’t like him that much, but I, at least, understand him.

Overall

As was with the first book, I generally liked it, but there were many faults as well. Since the theme and overall plot is definitely to my liking then there is no way I won’t take up the final book, especially with how things ended – I predict this series will have a superb conclusion (hopefully)!
