Crosby Stills Nash The Authorized Biography The Definitive Inside Story of the Supergroup Dave Zimmer 9780306809743 Books

What a phenomenally detailed read this is. Dave Zimmer meticulously describes the early years of these three legends, gently leading us through the years of sixties rock until the three paths finally converged in CSN. The incredible photography of Henry Diltz is a perfect complement to Zimmer's text. Zimmer explores the complex personality and ego issues which led to supreme dissonance among the men whose voices blended in harmonies so beautiful as to defy description. Harmony well done requires a blending of the individual voices, which necessitates submerging egos. Individually, the creative genius of each member is awe-inspiring, but collectively the music of CSN is pure, unadulterated magic.

With the addition of Neil Young to the mix, Zimmer depicts four ultra-creative souls struggling to be heard as indivduals. Written with the band's cooperation, the book is filled with interviews and insightful quotes. The later years of CSN&Y sound like a high school clique-breaking up, reconciling, reconfiguring and excluding. Zimmer guides us through the decades, transitioning smoothly from one member of the band to the next as he describes the triumphs and tragedies following the glory years.

In a time when musicians are blacklisted for speaking out about political issues, it is refreshing to be reminded that at one time musicians who protested through their music were heroes to many of us.

Crosby Stills Nash The Authorized Biography The Definitive Inside Story of the Supergroup Dave Zimmer 9780306809743 Books Reviews

I thought this book was great. Although I've been a CSN and CSNY fan my whole life, I'm only 25 so I wasn't around when Woodstock happened. This book gave me a new perspective on CSN and CSNY.

This group, to me, is right up there with the Beatles. Great harmony, great chemistry, great songs. And like the Beatles, they've endured their share of arguments and yet still manage to reach out to their fans with simple lyrics and songs.

I loved the biographical nature of the book. Sure, there were times I would have liked to have known what they were thinking as they wrote/sang a particular song, but I don't think this book was meant to discuss those details specifically. I loved reading about the bizarre details that few people know about them. There were many times I could not stop reading.

The only problem that I saw with the book was that there was not enough material. It can only go so far, but I would like to see an up-to-date version. When I finished, I felt like I could have read 100 more pages.

If you're a CSN/Y fan at all, you will not be disappointed. It will only leave you wanting more.
Having been in rock groups during the 60's & early 70's, having played many of CS&N tunes give me a real perspective on what they went through as individuals and as a group. Truly the worlds, first musical supergroup, they set the standard and still do today nearly 50 years later. This book gives all of the information about the group, each individual's ups and downs along with all of the additional studio musicians they used over the years. I've read "A Long Time Gone" about David Crosby and it is nothing except story after story of his drug problems. This book covered the good and bad of each of their lives - music, drugs, alcohol, family & friends. A must read if you enjoy Crosby, Stills & Nash's music. Keep in mind they are still playing today. The book also includes more than 250 pictures captured over the years.
Love it!
Okay book
I bought this book when the group did their 2000 Reunion Tour and thoroughly enjoyed both. Looking back, I'd say that I liked the book in the same way that I liked the group....the early days and the early struggles were the best.
What we forget about these guys was that their most productive years were from about 1968 to 1974 as a group and as individuals. All the years after this time, they have been only a shadow of themselves. If you like this book and are more of a Stills fan, be sure to read Richie Furay's book, For What It's Worth which is even more personal and detailed about the early days.
As a CSN fan, I'll always treasure those first two albums as a couple of my all-time favorites. I would hope that there is a live album from the last tour.
I also wish that someone would help Stills write a book, too. I'd love to hear his version of all that happened.
